Breast Cancer Online:
In Our Own Words Series

About the Booklets

The "In Our Own Words" Series is a collection of booklets comprised of postings and stories from participants of the BCANS Support Forum

From the back of each booklet:

Breast Cancer Online: In Our Own Words

Originally published in 1999, Breast Cancer Online: In Our Own Words was developed by participants of the BCANS support forum.  The group wanted to share with others who might not be aware of BCANS. The book was such a hit that a reprint was ordered and a follow-up book, Breast Cancer Online: In Our Own Words - How We Told Our Children was produced. It is our hope that these are only the first in a series of books aimed at providing information and support from women, to women who have "been there".

Breast Cancer Online: In Our Own Words: How We Told Our Children

As the second book in the Breast Cancer Action Nova Scotia's In our Own Words Series, How We Told Our Children was compiled in response to requests to help parents and families better cope with a new diagnosis or recurrence of breast cancer.  It is a unique collection of shared stories from mothers around the world who lived the experience.  The book also includes "Suggested Acts of Kindness, Common Reactions of Children and How to Help, and 10 Commonly Asked Questions.

The power of sharing story has a multi-level affect. It not only helps the storyteller heal, but provides support, guidance and inspiration to those sharing the story. It is through stories that women living with breast cancer can learn that they are not alone with this terrifying disease.
