Welcome to Breast Cancer Action Nova Scotia (BCANS)

Breast Cancer Action Nova Scotia is a survivor driven group that voices the unique concerns of people living with breast cancer. We are united in our desire to change the legacy of breast cancer through networking, support, education and research.

The BCANS Web Site is meant for educational use only. BCANS does not necessarily support all of the viewpoints herein. Anyone who has or might have a health problem should consult a professional health care provider. BCANS encourages each person to become informed about the full range of preventive, diagnostic, and treatment options when making decisions about their health care.

Our breast cancer support forums provide a caring and knowledgeable environment. Discussions include breast surgery, breast health, mastectomy, lumpectomy, chemotherapy, tamoxifen, reconstruction options, symptoms of breast cancer, side effects, treatments, issues surrounding a diagnosis of advanced or metastatic breast disease and more. Visit the Support and Community Forums:

How You Can Help

Host an event in support of BCANS. Visit this link to read our Third Party Events Policy and learn how you can help BCANS help those affected by breast cancer.

You are Invited to Join BCANS - There are many ways to become part of BCANS:  by becoming a member, volunteering, working on a committee, or even by serving on the Board of Directors. Our work on behalf of breast cancer surivors in Nova Scotia will be enhanced by an expanded membership and will allow us to speak with a stronger voice.  Your membership WILL make a difference. You can choose the level of involvement that suits your capabilities and the time you have available.

Who can Join? - Membership is open to residents of Canada (18 years and older), who are survivors or others who have an interest in breast cancer because of friends or family members who have been affected by it.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Resource Centre - Volunteers can help patrons find books and articles, select videos, and go online to find further resources. Sometimes the most valuable resource a volunteer can provide is a quiet chat over a cup of tea.  Resource Centre volunteers also track and re-shelf books and pamphlets, enter new items into the database, search for new online references, and identify, order, and review additions to the collection.

Office Staffing - Volunteers staff the office during normal business hours (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) to answer the phone and handle general office duties such as filing and routine correspondence.  They also provide support, and make referrals to other services for survivors and family members who need help.

BCANS Events - Volunteers are always needed to publicize BCANS events.  For monthly Education Talks, they help by calling the telephone list, setting up the room, acting as greeters, serving refreshments, and tidying up afterwards.  During the off-site events they staff the booth displays and assist with presentations.  There are also many volunteer opportunities connected with our annual fundraiser, Bustin'Out Celebration of Spring.

Work on a Committee - To become more involved and learn about BCANS from the inside out, please think about serving on one of our committees.  Committee members usually meet once every month or two and work on specific activities or projects on behalf of BCANS as a whole. Our committees are:

  • Advocacy
  • Bustin'Out Celebration of Spring
  • Education & Communication
  • Fundraising
  • Breast Cancer Network Nova Scotia
  • Resource Centre
  • Websites & Forums

Board of Directors - The BCANS Board of Directors is a working board, and its members are actively involved in providing leadership for committees and projects.  Board members are elected at the Annual General Meeting held in March or April.  A term is usually for a year.  At least 60% of the Board of Directors must be breast cancer survivors.

BCANS welcomes new members and volunteers.  Membership dues are $10 each year. If you are interested in joining BCANS, kindly contact us to set up an in-person meeting. We'll answer any questions that you may have about the group and its activities. Contact us at 902-465-2685 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for more details.

Submit articles and events - BCANS and its sister site, ABCN, seek news stories and events for their web sites, newsletters and calendars. Submit your story or event for inclusion by contacting us.
